## What changes the result
- Your regime: the new regime is the default; the old regime must be chosen and only pays off with large deductions.
- Deductions under the old regime — 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh), 80D, HRA, home loan interest and NPS (80CCD(1B)).
- The Section 87A rebate: nil tax up to ₹12 lakh taxable income in the new regime (₹5 lakh in the old), with marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh.
- Age: the old regime has higher basic exemptions for people aged 60 and above; this table uses below-60 slabs.
- Income type — capital gains, for example, are taxed at special rates outside these slabs.

## FAQ
**Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?**
Under the new regime, the Section 87A rebate makes tax nil when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh salary after the standard deduction). Special-rate income such as capital gains is treated separately.

**Which regime should I choose?**
If your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest) are large, the old regime can be cheaper; otherwise the new regime usually is. The calculator shows both.

**What are the new regime slabs for FY 2025-26?**
Nil up to ₹4 lakh; 5% from ₹4–8 lakh; 10% from ₹8–12 lakh; 15% from ₹12–16 lakh; 20% from ₹16–20 lakh; 25% from ₹20–24 lakh; and 30% above ₹24 lakh, plus 4% cess.

**Is surcharge included?**
No. Surcharge applies only when total income exceeds ₹50 lakh and is not included in the calculator or the table.

**What is marginal relief?**
Just above ₹12 lakh of taxable income, new-regime tax (before cess) cannot exceed the income above ₹12 lakh. On ₹12.10 lakh taxable, slab tax would be ₹61,500, but tax payable is only ₹10,000. The relief stops mattering at about ₹12.71 lakh of taxable income; on ₹12.75 lakh, tax is ₹71,250 before cess.
