Last reviewed
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in. Deposits, interest and maturity are tax-free, and deposits qualify for the Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime.
How the ppf calculation works
Maturity = D × [((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) / r] × (1 + r), for a yearly deposit D made at the start of each year.
Example
Depositing ₹1,50,000 every year for 15 years at 7.1% builds about ₹40,68,209.

What changes the result
- The PPF rate, which the government reviews every quarter.
- Deposit timing: interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so depositing by 5 April earns interest for the full year.
- The yearly deposit, from ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh per financial year.
- Extensions in 5-year blocks after the first 15 years.
