A recurring deposit (RD) lets you deposit a fixed amount every month. Banks usually compound RD interest quarterly, so each instalment earns interest for the months it stays invested.

What changes the result

  • The RD rate, which is usually the same as the bank’s FD rate for that tenure.
  • Tenure and the monthly amount.
  • Missed instalments, which attract a penalty and reduce interest.
  • Tax: RD interest is taxable at your slab rate and TDS applies above the threshold.

RD Calculator FAQs

What if I miss an instalment?

Banks may charge a small penalty and your maturity amount will be lower. Rules differ by bank.

RD or SIP?

An RD gives a fixed, guaranteed return; a SIP in mutual funds can earn more over long periods but returns are not guaranteed.

Is TDS deducted on RD interest?

Yes. Recurring deposit interest is treated like FD interest: TDS applies when total deposit interest from a bank crosses the yearly threshold, and the interest is taxable at your slab rate.

How is a Post Office RD different?

A Post Office RD has a fixed 5-year term and a rate set by the government each quarter. Bank RDs offer a choice of tenures, typically from 6 months to 10 years.
